Bas House, a townhouse proposal in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, explores the spatial possibilities of surface relief using untraditionally light and porous materials. The house conforms to an atypical trapezoidal lot and is adjacent to the BQE expressway, responding to a challenging set of site constraints.
The veiled facade creates a flattening effect of the house's layers in elevation. In plan, the contours of relief alternate in concavity and convexity, figuring entry, aperture, and thresholds, ultimately extending into the building to delineate a semi-circular room suspended above the common areas.
